Funder Safeguarding Pledge
Where commitment meets action
Abuse has caused indelible harm to individuals, families, and communities. Within the philanthropic world, scandal has also impacted nonprofit organizations’ credibility and sustainability. The Funder Safeguarding Pledge and its capacity-building program aim to support foundations and grantees in developing safeguarding best practices, focused on preventing abuse and promoting healthy, safe organizational cultures.
- Prioritizes the safety of children and vulnerable adults and offers education and support to foundations and their grantees to help prevent abuse;
- Recognizes the significant impact and support that donors can have in promoting healthy organizational cultures;
- Encourages funders to make simple changes to their grant application process OR to their regular interaction with grantee partners via accessible, actionable steps that promote safeguarding.
Through FADICA’s initiative, pledged members and all of their grantees are granted access to a capacity-building program, including expert trainings and sample policies, at no cost for three years. For grantee organizations that may lack the capacity or financial resources to develop and sustain safeguarding best practices, this support is critical. Developing safeguarding capacity within the FADICA network deceases the burden on any individual member and increases access for a larger number of organizations.
While FADICA’s decision to create the pledge was rooted in principles of Catholic Social Teaching and a proactive response to the sexual abuse crisis within the Catholic Church, any funder can adopt a similar safeguarding pledge and adapt it to one’s grantmaking environment.
